Two new bird species found in Ladakh
- In Ladakh, two new bird species have been found during the Great Backyard Bird count.
- The three-day exercise undertaken by the Wildlife Conservation and Birds Club of Ladakh concluded on 18 Feb 2020.
- Red Throated Thrush and Plumbeous Water Redstart have been found for the first time in Ladakh Region.
- Common Rose Finch and Grey Haron species have arrived in Ladakh region early than usual.

National level Tribal Youth Exchange Programme
- The 7-day 12th National level Tribal Youth Exchange Programme (TYEP), is being held between 18-24 February 2020 at Youth Hostel Nagrota.
- J&K Secretary, Youth Services and Sports, Sarmad Hafeez inaugurated the Youth Exchange Programme.
- 220 participants and contingent leaders from different districts of Jharkhand and Odisha are participating.
Odisha govt presented Rs 1.5 lakh crore budget
- In Odisha, Finance Minister Niranjan Pujari presented the annual budget of the state for 2020-21 with an outlay of 1.5 lakh crore rupees, on 18 Feb 2020.
- The Minister had presented a 1.39 lakh-crore rupees Budget in 2019.
- The Odisha Government for the first time, switched to a digital method of budget presentation to reduce the printing of papers for the exercise.
AIFF received membership of AFC
- The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has received the “Grassroots Charter Bronze Level” membership of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
- This declaration accords AIFF the right to promote its grassroots events and activities with the support and recognition of the AFC in accordance with the applicable terms of the AFC Grassroots Charter.
FIFA U-17 World Cup to be hosted in 5 cities
- Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju launched an event in New Delhi on 18 Feb 2020 to unveil the five host cities for the FIFA Under-17 Women’s Football World Cup.
- The tournament will begin on 2nd of November 2020.
- The matches of the world cup will be held in 5 cities including Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Kolkata and Navi Mumbai.
- The finals will be played on 21 Nov 2020 at Navi Mumbai.
Sunil Kumar won a gold medal
- Sunil Kumar opened India’s medal account in the Asian Wrestling Championships at New Delhi on 18 Feb 2020 by winning a Gold.
- He beat Azat Salidinov from Kyrgyzstan in the final of the 87 kg category.
- Sunil Kumar had reached the final by a victory over Kazakh opponent Azamat Kustubayev to finish the semi-final bout 12-8.
Mickey Wright passed away
- Mickey Wright, often described as the greatest woman golfer of all times, passed away in Feb 2020.
- Her haul of 13 major victories included four US Women’s Open titles and four US Women’s PGA Championships.
- Wright had accumulated 82 titles of Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour titles during a professional career which stretched from 1954 to 1969.
2011 world cup moment: Laureus best moment
- Sachin Tendulkar being carried on the shoulders of his team mates following India’s world cup triumph in 2011 was voted as the Laureus best sporting moment in the past 20 years.
- Former Australian captain Steve Waugh presented the trophy to Tendulkar on 17 Feb 2020.
- First held in 2000, the Annual Laureus Sports Awards honour the greatest and most inspirational sporting triumphs of the year.
Hindi is 3rd most spoken language in the world
- Hindi is the 3rd most spoken language of the world in 2019 with 615 million speakers.
- The 22nd edition of the world language database Ethnologue stated English at the top of the list with 1,132 million speakers.
- Chinese Mandarin is at the second position with 1,117 million speakers.
- Bangla has been ranked as the 7th most spoken language of the world. Bangla has 228 million native speakers.
Barry O’Farrell: High commissioner to India
- Australia has appointed former New South Wales premier Barry O’Farrell as the next high commissioner to India.
- Mr O’Farrell will succeed Harinder Sidhu who has been in the office since 2016.
- Mr O’Farrell served in the New South Wales Parliament from 1995-2015 and the 43rd Premier of the province.
- He has also served as New South Wales’ Special Envoy for India
CBRI Roorkee organised a workshop in Nepal
- Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee organised a workshop in Kathmandu, Nepal on 18 Feb 2020.
- The workshop was on the post-earthquake reconstruction of schools and other educational facilities
- It was aimed to provide best practices for delivering End to End construction management at all stages of the project including pre-construction, construction and post-construction.
