Preston Taylor climbed the chain-link fence with a mouth full of zip ties, early Friday morning in Santa Clarita. Coworker Michael Mendelson firmly pressed a sign reading, “WE STAND TOGETHER!” waiting for Taylor to affix it to the fence.
For this pair, who work for Santa Clarita Valley digital printer Creative Graphic Services, this may their last assignment for a while due to the statewide stay at home order.
But it’s a special gig.
Teams of workers set out Friday to place 125 signs bearing such messages as “Thank You Health Care Workers” and “Everything Will Be Alright.”
“This has been in the works since earlier this week,” said owner Jim Niner. “when we as a company decided to do the right thing by closing our doors at the end of business today and take a two-week break for the health and safety of the team and community.”

What’s the motivation? “This crisis has caused a sense of concern, despair, feelings of hopelessness, and panic in the community,” said Niner. “As we shut our doors, we thought it a good idea to leave the community with positive and uplifting messages to be seen, maybe in some small part reminding us that we will get through this, together, because we are a resilient community and society.”
Taylor, and Mendelson walked through the parking lot of Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital with signs tucked under their arms.
“Do you think the vines on that wall will hold a sign?” Taylor asked as they eyed a spot on a vine-covered stone wall. “I think so,” said Mendelson.
Moments later, a sign reading “This Too Shall Pass” was displayed to drivers making their way through the intersection.
A Santa Clarita native and 1983 graduate of Hart High, Niner has a special connection to the community. His daughter works as an emergency room nurse at Henry Mayo and his son is a teacher and volleyball coach at Hart High.
Niner won’t say how much this project is costing him. To him, providing a sense of calm, hope and unity is priceless.
“We love our community and while we’re able to, we will continue to put forth reminders of the good, with positivity, hope and encouragement that we all need to see, each and every day.”
