Mammoth Mountain takes coronavirus precautions as big snow is forecast
1 min read
With heavy snowfall forecast for the next few days, Mammoth Mountain Ski Area will continue operation, but officials are taking precautions to protect guests and employees from exposure to the coronavirus.
According to the Mono County Health Department, as of 3 p.m. Friday, March 13, there were no reported cases of COVID-19 in either Mono or Inyo counties.
Still, Mammoth officials are changing how they operate.
Gondola cabins — traveling to the midmountain McCoy Station and to the summit — will be loaded to just 50% capacity and regularly disinfected. Other ski lifts also will be loaded at less than capacity.
Mammoth Mountain and town shuttles will be loaded at 50% capacity with no standing permitted at this time.
Seating capacity at Main, Canyon and Eagle lodges also will be reduced with the removal of some tables and chairs, allowing for social distancing — remaining at least 6 feet from others.
Hand sanitizers and sanitation stations have been added at the lodges and other high-traffic areas. There also will be increased disinfection of public areas such as bathrooms, food halls, door handles, tables, restaurants, bars, lesson and rental check-in counters, and communal computer workstations
The predicted storm — much welcome in an unusually dry season — is expected to draw skiers and boarders to the resort despite concern over the virus. There was no snowfall in February, whereas more than 200 inches fell in February 2019.
March has been better with 12 inches in the last week and the next few days are expected to drop up to six feet at the summit and four feet at Main Lodge.
