State Parks announces more parking closures, including Orange County beaches and Riverside area parks, to curb coronavirus spread

California State Parks beefed up its list of parking lot closures on Thursday, March 26, adding to restrictions to the public to try and stop the spread of coronvirus.

The state had already put in lot closures for a handful of beaches in Los Angeles County and beyond after big crowds showed up last weekend, concerning officials who worry about people not adhering to the social distancing rules of being 6-feet away from one another.

That list excluded Orange County’s beaches, but Thursday’s announcement adds Huntington State Beach, Bolsa Chica, Doheny State Beach, San Clemente  State Beach and San Onofre to the list of lots closed.

While parking will be shut down, the beaches will stay open for people who can walk in or ride bikes.

The latest lists also includes lots throughout Riverside and San Bernadino County, including Chino Hills State Park, Lake Perris and Silverwood Lake.

State Parks warned that officials be monitoring visitation and if safety measures implemented are not sufficient to protect public health, additional measures may be taken to fully close parks, including trails, bathrooms and other amenities, the release said.

The state last week also shut down all campgrounds throughout California 

The temporarily vehicle access closure applies to 59 more state parks and beaches, bringing the total number to 98.

“Last weekend, many state parks and beaches received record visitation numbers, which made it impossible for the public to implement appropriate social/physical distancing practices,” the release said. “As a result, State Parks is working closely with local county and public health officials and assessing park operations on a daily basis to provide access to healthy outdoor options while maintaining required social/physical distancing.”
