PM Modi’s Approval Ratings Highest Among World Leaders During COVID-19
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s approval ratings increased from 62% to 68% between January 1 and April 14, as per data collated by an international polling agency Morning Consult. According to the report, as shared by Forbes, the rise in PM Modi’s popularity during the pandemic is the highest amongst all global leaders, the report added.
The increase corresponds to the period of COVID-19 outbreak in India. During this time, the prime minister imposed a 21-day nationwide lockdown till April 14 and then extended it till May 3.
PM Modi’s popularity turned out to be better than world leaders such as UK PM Boris Johnson, US President Donald Trump, Canada PM Justin Trudeau, German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Among other leaders who saw an uptick in popularity as per Morning Consult’s data include Johnson, Australia’s Scott Morrison, Brazil’s Jair Bolsanaro, Trudeau, Merkel, Mexico’s Lopez Obrador and Trump during the period from January 1 until April 14.
Among all ten countries surveyed, Japan’s Shinzo Abe has the lowest rating (at negative 33) and the worst decline in net approval, having fallen from negative 18 at the start of 2020.
Other leaders that have seen their popularity dip include US President Donald Trump and Brazil’s Prime Minister Jair Bolsanaro. The three world leaders have been strongly criticised for their handling of COVID-19, with President Trump even cutting out funding to the World Health Organisation.
Notably, the study only surveyed 10 countries i.e. India, United States, Mexico, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, Brazil, France, Germany and Italy.
In fact, the Forbes report, quoting another survey said, “Germany’s chancellor Angela Merkel’s approval rating increased 11 points to 79% since early March, according to a recent poll from Forschungsgruppe Wahlen, a Germany-based research company.
