16 Migrants Returning To Madhya Pradesh Run Over By Goods Train

AURANGABAD (Maharashtra): At least 14 migrant workers sleeping on rail tracks were crushed to death by a goods train in Aurangabad district this morning. Two others injured in the mishap which took place under the Karmad Police station jurisdiction.

Police said that the workers were walking to Bhusawal from Jalna in central Maharashtra along rail tracks. It said that they were sleeping on rail tracks due to exhaustion when they were run over by the goods train coming from Jalna.

Authorities added that the labourers run over were natives of Umaria and Shahdol in Madhya Pradesh and were working in SRG Company in Jalna.

The police said, three labourers who were also part of the group survived as they were sleeping some distance away from rail tracks.

The Ministry of Railways has now put out a tweet and said that an inquiry has been ordered into the tragic incident.

“During early hours today after seeing some labourers on track, loco pilot of goods train tried to stop the train but eventually hit them between Badnapur and Karmad stations in Parbhani-Manmad section. Injured have been taken to Aurangabad Civil Hospital. An inquiry has been ordered,” the ministry said.

The railways further clarified that the around 15 to 20 people were sleeping on the track when the incident occurred.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said an enquiry has been ordered into the incident and relief work is underway.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident. The Prime Minister in a tweet said, he spoke to the Railway Minister and he is closely monitoring the situation.
