COVID-19: Total Cases Tally In India Crosses 1,00,000

NEW DELHI: India’s coronavirus cases crossed one lakh on Monday, May 18. with more people testing positive for COVID-19 in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and other states. Of a total of 101,339 confirmed cases reported so far, 58,802 are active cases, while 39,174 persons have recovered from the infection. The country recorded 142 more deaths in the last 24 hours. taking the overall death toll to 3,163.

India’s first COVID-19 case was reported in Kerala on January 30 when a medical student from Wuhan, the epicentre of the virus, tested positive in Thrissur.

According to the Union Health Ministry, the country has now registered a jump of over 10,000 cases in the past two days — the highest so far in 48 hours.

As of Monday, Maharashtra accounted for 33,053 of the cases, followed by Gujarat at 11,379, Tamil Nadu at 11,224, Delhi at 10,054 Rajasthan at 5,202, Madhya Pradesh at 4,977 and Uttar Pradesh at 4,259.

India, however, is doing much better than almost the entire world in fighting the virus:

Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said India has taken all necessary steps well in time to fight the pandemic.

“Global collaboration is paramount. Governments, industry and philanthropy must pool resources to pay for the risk, the research, manufacturing and distribution, but with the condition that the rewards should be available to everyone, regardless of where they have been developed,” he said in his address to the 73rd World Health Assembly via video conferencing.

India undertook the COVID-19 challenge with the highest level of political commitment, he added. Therapeutics, diagnostics and vaccines for the whole world is the only way out of this pandemic, the Health Minister said.

His address came after India on Monday joined 120 countries at the World Health Organisation (WHO) in pushing for an impartial and comprehensive evaluation of the global response into the coronavirus crisis as well as to examine the origin of the deadly infection.

But The Rising Cases Remains A Cause Of Massive Worry:

The cases rose even as several states announced easing of lockdown guidelines after it was extended till May 31 by the centre. Over 3,000 have died in India due to coronavirus so far.

With an aim to reboot numerous locked down economic activities, authorities across the country ordered reopening of markets, intra-state transport services and even of barbershops and salons in some states, barring in containment zones.

However, schools, colleges, theatres, malls and religious gatherings are among those that would remain shut down, at least till May 31.

The Narendra Modi-led NDA Government at Delhi has given the maximum possible freedom to states, allowing them to colour-code the zones according to the incidence of coronavirus, thereby taking a final decision on what activities are allowed in any particular area.

The centre has made it clear that only essential activities should be allowed in containment zones. It has allowed buses and other vehicles to run. But flights and metro services remain closed.

ICMR Responding To The Fluid Situation:

Sources have suggested that in the light of the rising numbers, the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) revised its testing strategy.

Now, returnees from abroad and migrants who show symptoms for influenza-like illness will be tested for COVID-19 within seven days of ailment.

The ICMR stressed that no emergency clinical procedure, including deliveries, should be delayed for lack of testing.

The ICMR also added that all hospitalised patients who develop symptoms for influenza-like illness (ILI) and frontline workers involved in containment and mitigation of COVID-19 having such signs will also be tested for coronavirus infection through RT-PCR test.

Besides, asymptomatic direct and high-risk contacts of a confirmed case are to be tested once between day five and day 10 of coming in contact, the revised test strategy document stated.
