COVID-19: Cases, Deaths, And, Encouragingly, Recoveries Keep Rising
NEW DELHI: India recorded its biggest single-day jump in new coronavirus cases and deaths with 9,996 fresh infections and 357 patients dying, taking the country’s tally to nearly 2.8 lakh cases. This is the ninth consecutive day that the country – fifth worst-hit by the pandemic – reported over 9,000 COVID-19 cases in a single day.
India continued to remain the fifth worst-affected country after the US, Brazil, Russia and the UK.
However, the Government has said that for the first time the number of recovered patients from COVID-19 has exceeded the number of active patients. The Health Ministry said, 1,35,205 patients have recovered and the total number of active cases is 1,33,632.

Central Teams are being deputed to provide technical support and handhold to the State Health Departments and Municipal Health Officials to review public health measures being undertaken for COVID-19 in six cities. These cities are Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi and Bengaluru.
The teams will undertake a visit to these cities within the next one week to review public health measures being undertaken for COVID-19.
The teams will submit a daily report of activities undertaken to the State Health Department and the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. They will inform them regarding any issue of urgent importance and also submit a report of its observations and suggestions before concluding the visit.
Maharashtra hit a new milestone by registering 3,235 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours. The state’s COVID-19 tally reached 94,041. Mumbai alone accounted for 52,667 COVID-19 cases since the outbreak. The state also recorded the highest number of deaths on Wednesday — coronavirus had claimed 149 lives in the state on Wednesday.
Delhi continued to add over 1,500 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours. The total number of COVID-19 cases in the national capital stood at 32,810. This was the second time over 1,500 cases have been reported in a day in Delhi. The deaths from coronavirus infection rose to 984 in the capital.
Tamil Nadu also saw the biggest jump in daily COVID-19 count. The state confirmed 1,927 new cases in the last 24 hours, taking the tally to 36,841. Tamil Nadu witnessed over 1,500 coronavirus cases for the fourth straight day. The state had the most number of COVID-19 cases after Maharashtra.
Uttar Pradesh, which is one of the most densely populated states, registered biggest single-day spike in the number of deaths linked to the illness with 20 patients dying. The state, which has recorded over 11,000 cases, have reported 321 deaths so far.
Globally, the number of coronavirus cases have crossed the 74-lakh mark as number of country prepared to reopen after months of lockdown.
The United States – the epicentre of the pandemic – has reported over 20 lakh cases so far and over 1 lakh deaths.
