YouTube begins testing picture-in-picture (PiP) mode

Few iOS users share being able to see YouTube’s test of a native YouTube picture-in-picture (PiP) feature, in the latest versions of the YouTube app.

YouTube users on iOS can continue accessing the home screen or using any other app while they watch a video in a smaller window, once they have enabled the picture-in-picture (PiP) mode.

9to5Mac has also confirmed the tests being conducted with a small group of users. According to their report, the feature is only limited to YouTube Premium users, the paid version of YouTube.

The addition would be useful in several use cases, for instance, YouTube is also used for listening to music, and a user can continue using other apps while continuing to do that on YouTube. But, it would also distort the video-watching experience on the platform.

The reason why YouTube doesn’t allow videos to play on a locked screen and keep the audio running, and probably why they hadn’t introduced PiP until now is, it is fundamentally a video platform, and adding the features mentioned hitherto can change that.

YouTube Premium is ad-free, but if PiP is introduced in the main app, it would also mean reduced or no attention to all ads.
