Did Apple Just Leak A Notch-Less iPhone On Ted Lasso?

Apple is expected to announce its new iPhone 13 in September and an eagle-eyed viewer recently spotted an unknown iPhone in use on a Ted Lasso episode on Apple's TV+. Naturally, this brings into question whether Apple accidentally leaked its upcoming smartphone via its streaming video service.

Apple TV+ is an ad-free, subscription-based, streaming video service that the iPhone and Mac computer manufacturer launched in 2019. Apple signed on several notable actors and directors, including Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Aniston, Jason Momoa, and many more, making a strong push to enter this increasingly crowded market. The service got off to a slow start but is beginning to grow finally, having received several nominations for the 2021 Golden Globe Awards for both its original series and films.

Ted Lasso was the show that somewhat prominently displayed an iPhone with a design never seen before. The back looked like an iPhone 12 in white, however, the appearance of the front was a bit shocking since it had no notch. A common site, almost as iconic as the home button used to be, the notch is the black rounded rectangle at the top of the iPhone that houses the front-facing TrueDepth camera that enables Face ID. In two scenes, this mysterious iPhone is shown, once being held from two angles and again, lying face-up on a blanket. Paul Bailey tweeted photos of the television taken at these moments.

While many have hoped and dreamed of a notch-less iPhone, there are no indications that will happen in 2021. While Apple always makes an effort to reduce leaks and has taken more aggressive action than usual this year, such big news would undoubtedly have come in the form of hints and rumors. Removing the notch is almost certainly part of Apple's long-term goals, however, the iPhone 13 is expected by most analysts to still come with a TrueDepth camera and Face ID. Under-screen camera technology has advanced in the last year, however, most would agree that it hasn't improved enough to meet Apple's standards.

That leaves the question of what this unknown iPhone represents and the answer might be that it's just a prop. Action video series often feature firearms, knives, and broken glass that is not as real as they seem. Movie magic means using props that are safe to use and difficult to break, unless they are meant to do so. Another possibility is that this is a sneak peek of the iPhone 14 but that seems highly unlikely. If an iPhone 14 does exist in some form now, it would have to be a prototype device, which would be kept tightly under wraps, not appearing on the set of a video production that has dozens of personnel, not to mention plenty of cameras.

Rumors do suggest that the camera hardware is more compact this year, meaning the notch might be smaller. The idea of a notch-less iPhone is certainly intriguing, however, it is almost certain that the front of an iPhone 13 will look quite similar to that of the iPhone 12.
