ATLA's Live-Action Zuko Actor Quotes Classic Line to Sokka Actor In Video

Dallas Liu, who's playing Prince Zuko in the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender remake, has given a tease of his version of the character by delivering one of Zuko’s classic lines in a new video. Liu will star in the new Avatar series alongside Gordon Cormier (Aang), Kiawentiio (Katara), and Ian Ousley (Sokka). Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series has yet to enter production, and no official release date has been announced by the streamer thus far.

Out of all the characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender, Zuko remains one of the most popular among viewers. His beautiful arc from tenacious villain to pure-hearted hero is one of the best parts of the show, and original voice actor Dante Basco did a spectacular job bringing the character to life. That makes the act of bringing Zuko to live-action a challenging one, but Liu’s casting has been largely celebrated, and it looks like he could do great things in the Netflix series.

During a recent livestream with Ousley on Instagram, Liu worked in one of Zuko’s most famous and frequently quoted lines from the original series – “That’s rough, buddy.” Ousley immediately recognized the reference, showing his own affection for the Nickelodeon show. It’s great to see the Netflix cast displaying such love and reverence for the world of Avatar, and equally encouraging to see so much camaraderie among the actors.

In the original cartoon, Zuko delivers the “That’s rough, buddy” line to Sokka in the season 3 episode “The Boiling Rock.” It’s a response to Sokka’s sad yet hilarious claim that his first girlfriend, Princess Yue of the Northern Water Tribe, turned into the moon. The scene is funny, but also an important moment of bonding between the two characters, who are at that point in the story still learning to trust each other. As such, it’s especially fun to hear Liu deliver the line to Ousley, who will be playing Sokka in the Netflix series.

At this point, it’s unclear exactly how closely Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series will be sticking to the source material in terms of specifics beats and story arcs. Showrunner Albert Kim has stated that he doesn’t want to change too much, but some things will inevitably be altered to fit the new form. But maybe if Netflix’s Avatar does well enough to eventually get a season 3, Liu can deliver the famous Zuko line for real on camera.
