Demon Slayer's Water and Fire Hashira Star in New Manga From VIZ

A new manga from VIZ will bring back two epic Demon Slayer characters. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba -- Stories of Water and Flame presents new stories adding to the lore of two major supporting characters in the series. Giyu Tomioka - the Water Hashira - and Kyojuro Rengoku - the Flame Hashira - will each star in new adventures focused entirely on them.

Demon Slayer began publishing in 2016 within Weekly Shōnen Jump. The series concluded last year, but fans won't have to wait too much longer before a new story arrives. Kyojuro and Giyu are both major supporting characters within Demon Slayer. They are Hashira - the top warriors in the Demon Slayer Corps that patrol assigned regions for demons.

On Twitter, VIZ announced a new manga focused on Giyu and Kyojuro. It's expected to release at the beginning of 2022. It will include two stories, with one focused on each Hashira. This manga is coming at the perfect time, considering the recent release of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Demon Train. The film adapted Chapter 53 to Chapter 69 of the manga - also referred to as the Mugen Train Arc. It revolves predominantly around Tanjiro's interactions with Kyojuro Rengoku, who fans will likely be happy to see more of.

Savage demons devour unsuspecting humans in Taisho-era Japan. The Demon Slayer Corps wields special swords to end the devastation demons spread. Giyu Tomiola - the sole Water Hashira - and Kyojuro Rengoku - a high ranking Kinoe - travel on missions to eliminate demons and prove their mettle as two of the fiercest Demon Slayers.

Giyu heads north toward an area where hunters have been killed. He and the Insect Hashira meet Yae, the daughter of a slain hunter. Yae believes a bear killed her father, but the truth is harder to endure... Kyojuro also receives his newest assignment and hopes completing it will prove he's worthy of becoming the Flame Hashira, the title his father abandoned. An explosive battle unfolds as Kyojuro takes on a demon of the Twelve Kizuki with a grudge against Kyojuro's father.

This single Demon Slayer volume will seemingly present some very interesting stories. While the synopsis does not specify who the Insect Hashira is, it will likely be Shinobu Kocho since she created the Insect Breathing Style herself, deriving it from Flower Breathing Style as compensation for abilities she lacked. Fans who have read the manga will likely be excited to see her return also, considering how her story came to a close in the original series. Giyu certainly shouldn't be left out of the excitement since he plays such a major role in Tanjiro's journey; Giyu is the reason Tanjiro began his demon slayer training after all. With the manga predominantly focusing on Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko, this new manga will be a welcome addition. The world of Demon Slayer has such a layered history with each character that it would be a shame to leave it completely behind now that the main series has concluded.

The most exciting part of the new volume is definitely Kyojuro Rengoku's specific story. The Flame Breathing demon slayer played a pivotal role in Tanjiro's discovery of his power. While the story of him and his family was included in the original manga, it felt disappointgly short. There seemed to be a lot of history to the character of Kyojuro Rengoku’s father, in particular, that wasn't fully explored. Now, fans will be able to see Kyojuro's journey from a Kinoe with aim of becoming a Hashira, which in some ways may parallel Tanjiro's journey. Demon Slayer fans have a lot to look forward to when VIZ's new manga, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba -- Stories of Water and Flamereleases on January 4, 2022.
