Hideo Kojima Wonders If The Matrix 4 Is An Interactive Movie
Video game auteur, Hideo Kojima has questioned whether The Matrix Resurrections could in fact be an interactive movie. Resurrections is the first Matrix film in 18 years, and represents a return to the franchise by Lana Wachowski, one half of the creative duo behind the original trilogy. The long awaited fourth installment released its first trailer on September 9th, and showed off what fans can expect from the new movie, including Keanu Reeves and Carrie Ann Moss returning as hackers Neo and Trinity. The film will also star Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Morpheus (replacing Laurence Fishburne).
Kojima himself is noted for creating video games with unique and strange mechanics that also have strong sociological and political themes, not necessarily dissimilar to the Wachowskis. He is best known for the Metal Gear Solid series which delves into issues of conspiracy theories and alternative facts amidst its bombastic action and complicated plot. His most recent game, Death Stranding released in 2019 and saw the auteur collaborate with actor Norman Reedus and acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro.
In the wake of the release of the The Matrix 4, Kojima took to Twitter to express his excitement for the new movie and pointed out how vivid the color dynamic was. This led to him speculating that the film could be an interactive movie as he interpreted the trailer as presenting two different movies. He theorized that the film could have audiences choosing "between red and blue [with] different processes and endings" based on the version selected. He further added that their choice between colors could be "red for movie theaters and blue for distribution." You can read Kojima's full tweet below:
Kojima's interpretation of the trailer for The Matrix 4 is certainly a unique one but, considering his history of unique concepts in his games, it isn't all that surprising that he would interpret the trailer in such a manner. Kojima is right to point out the color dynamics at play in the Matrix trailer, though as they seem to be an even greater feature than in the original trilogy. In the first film, Morpheus offered Neo a choice between a blue pill and a red pill, the former would keep him in the Matrix while the latter would awaken him the real world. However, this dichotomy seems to be taken even further in The Matrix 4.
Notably, Henwick's character features a blue streak in her hair while Abdul-Mateen II's Morpheus sports a red shirt. While the pair are shown to be working together in the trailer, the color opposition could suggest a difference in opinion about what should be done with those in the new Matrix. This difference of opinion certainly feels on the nose, but it wouldn't be anything new considering the barely veiled Christ metaphor prevalent throughout the original trilogy.
While Kojima's theory seems unlikely, it would be an interesting concept to play with. The Matrix Resurrections is releasing both in theaters and on-demand via HBO Max, so it would be possible for each version could be slightly different. However, this would most likely only leave fans frustrated and dissatisfied, especially when attending the cinema is still a risk due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That said, there is still a lot that we don't know about the film, but whatever the true plot of The Matrix 4 is will surely be revealed as its release date of December 22 draws ever closer.
