James Gunn Teases '80s-Centric Soundtrack For Peacemaker Series
James Gunn looks like he'll be at his absolute James Gunn-iest when audiences finally get to experience his upcoming Peacemaker series. As a spinoff to The Suicide Squad that may or may not be set both before and after the film in question, the John Cena-led project has been a bit of an enigma since its announcement. But now one thing is for certain: it will feature a whole lot of hair metal.
Now there's a genre that many probably haven't heard in a long time, while many others hear it on a daily basis. Like Guardians of the Galaxy, Peacemaker looks like it will go back to Gunn's preferred style of licensing classic hits that fit perfectly with what's happening on screen. Sure, The Suicide Squad was no slouch when it came to its soundtrack. But in contrast to that film's rather eclectic range of musical choices, Peacemaker will be much more focused, just like its central character.
During a recent press tour panel, Gunn decided to tease eager fans a bit with some tidbits about the soundtrack for the upcoming Peacemaker series. While he didn't go into any specifics, he did get about as explicit as one could get while still somehow remaining coy, saying "it really is all hair metal... A lot of '80s hair metal, but it's also a lot of modern sleaze rock and hair metal that comes out of Europe — a lot of really great bands that people don't know about." It's a good time to remember the 1980s were good for more than just cool one-liners.

So it looks like some of that more eccentric range of music picks from The Suicide Squad has inspired its spinoff as well. Not only that, but fans of Cena can look forward to some rather endearing sequences with the beefy protagonist. Namely, one of the first things shot during the production of Peacemaker was a scene of Cena's character dancing to hair metal... in his tighty-whities. Apparently, Gunn has a particular fondness for getting Cena in his underwear as much as possible (a theory posed by Cena himself on multiple occasions). But the star seems openly cool with it, so hooray for consensual eye candy.
While most details are still unknown about the Peacemaker series, the official description on HBO Max claims it will "explore the origins" of Cena's titular character. He described himself pretty aptly in The Suicide Squad, saying "I cherish peace with all my heart. I don’t care how many men, women, and children I need to kill to get it." So if nothing else, that's certainly a morbidly intriguing way to get people interested in seeing what makes this misguided beefcake tick.
If nothing else, the knowledge about Peacemaker's soundtrack may help to set the tone for the series. Gunn is pretty well-known for picking the absolute perfect musical choice for any given scene. So knowing that most of those picks will be from the era of Def Leppard and Poison is sure to get fans in the mood. Perhaps now is the best time to check out the new Peacemaker teaser.
Peacemaker will premiere in January 2022 on HBO Max.
