PlayStation's Kratos, Ratchet & Clank Are Soccer Stars In TV Commercial

A commercial for the UEFA Champions soccer league sees PlayStation icons like Nathan Drake, Aloy, Kratos, Ratchet, and Clank participate in some competitive football. The Union of European Football Associations is an annual European football tournament featuring teams from across the continent. The current 2021-22 season will run until May 2022, and soccer's huge popularity throughout the world makes for a suitable team-up with PlayStation's iconic lineup of exclusive titles.

Console exclusives are an important way that the gaming industry's biggest companies attract gamers to their specific consoles. Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony all have popular exclusives on their respective systems, but PlayStation, in particular, has assembled a large selection of high-quality titles in recent years. These beloved franchises include UnchartedGod of WarRatchet & Clankand Horizon. These first-party franchises, often single-player and narrative-driven series that put emphasis on storytelling and world-building, can only be found on PlayStation consoles. However, in recent years many PlayStation exclusives have been ported to PC, giving a whole new audience a chance to experience these grand adventures.

A new television commercial, posted to YouTube by PlayStation, acts as an epic crossover between the UEFA Champions League and several of Sony's iconic mascots. The commercial kicks off with a shot of Kratos and Atreus, sporting their designs from the upcoming God of War Ragnarok, leading one of the tournament's teams onto the field. Horizon Forbidden West's Aloy is then seen helping out one team's coaches, using her highly advanced Focus device to plan out plays. When a player is injured during the game, the Ratchet & Clank series' titular stars come through a wormhole and escort him off the field. Throughout the entire game Uncharted protagonist Nathan Drake is seen climbing a grappling hook to get an exceptional view of the entire field.

Despite the huge popularity of the PlayStation brand, and the amount of praise heaped upon the PlayStation 5, reports indicate that PS5 sales have fallen short of the PlayStation 4. The new-generation console's predecessor sold about 13.5 million consoles within its first year, while the PS5 sold around 13.4 million units in that same time. However, due to an ongoing shortage of both the PS5 and its competitor the Xbox Series X/S, this lower number of sales is not unexpected. Still, if Sony means to surpass the success of its last-generation hardware, a greater supply of PS5 systems must be made available to customers.

The UEFA draws in massive crowds of viewers, with a huge part of the world dedicated to the daily developments of the European football world. This makes the organization a perfect fit for PlayStation sponsorship, as the gaming brand has assembled an iconic roster of exclusive titles and characters over the last several years. Heroes like Kratos, Aloy, and Nathan Drake are unmistakable, and their adventures can only be experienced on PlayStation consoles or PCs. With some of gaming's most beloved icons on the field, the partnership between UEFA and PlayStation is no doubt valuable to both entertainment juggernauts.
