Thor Won’t Return Eternals Star’s Calls In New MCU Trailer

A new promo for Eternals revisits pivotal moments from the MCU and reveals that Thor hasn't been returning Kingo's calls. After completing principal photography over a year ago, Eternals suffered numerous setbacks during the post-production process due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the release of the third film in the MCU's Phase 4 is just a few days away. Eternals is written and directed by the Academy Award-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao who is expected to shake up the MCU with her unique vision.

Eternals follows a cosmic group of super-powered immortals who have been secretly living on Earth for over 7,000 but have been instructed by their creators, the Celestials, to not interfere in human affairs unless Deviants are involved. After the sudden return of half the population in Avengers: Endgame ignites an enigmatic occurrence known as the Emergence, the Eternals must reunite to protect Earth from their enemies. The titular team features Gemma Chan's Sersi, Richard Madden's Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani's Kingo, Salma Hayek's Ajak, and Angelina Jolie's Thena.

Now, with Eternals' theatrical release date a few days away, a new promo is highlighting the film's connection to the larger MCU. The 1-minute trailer revisits multiple major moments from past Marvel films, namely the iconic portals scene, Hulk's snap, and Tony Stark's funeral, all from Avengers: Endgame, but there are also some snippets of Iron Man 3 and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier sprinkled in there as well. The clips are accompanied by a voiceover from Hayek's Ajak explaining how the Eternals have watched these various events take place, but have never interfered. After what is an entirely serious trailer, it ends with a humorous button scene showing the Eternals sitting around a dinner table with Nanjiani's Eternal Kingo reminiscing about how Thor used to follow him around as a little kid, but now he's a famous Avenger who won't return his calls, while the rest of the team laughs at him. This is just a taste of the humor the MCU film will offer along with its epic cosmos-faring storyline.

Over the past several weeks, Marvel Studios has been amping up its marketing campaign to build anticipation for Eternals' release. Highlighting the film's connection to Avengers: Endgame, one of the biggest cinematic events in history, is obviously a smart marketing tactic, one that Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings also used during the last leg of their promotional campaigns as well. How exactly Eternals connects to Endgame will be revealed soon enough when the film hits theaters this Friday.
