Ghostbusters/Transformers Crossover Revealed Gozer Destroyed Cybertron
When the Transformers met the Ghostbusters, it was revealed that their homeworld Cybertron had been destroyed by the all-powerful Gozer. While it would be a thousand years or so before the infamous Traveler was defeated by the Ghostbusters, this was one of the first instances where Gozer proved its reputation, interrupting the war between the Autobots and Decepticons. Although the Decepticons' first impression with Gozer went better than that of the Ghostbusters, they too were unable to prevent Gozer from assuming a new form, destroying their world like it had done to countless others before.
Since the Transformers' creation in 1984, the heroic Autobots led by Optimus Prime have been locked in battle with the Decepticons, who are led by the merciless Megatron. Originally, there was a Great War which consumed their homeworld, the mechanical paradise called Cybertron, forcing both parties to travel the universe in search of new worlds to call home. Although the reasons for Cybertron's destruction have varied through different incarnations, its destruction and the exodus of its survivors to other planets have remained consistent.
In Transformers/Ghostbusters #1 by Erik Burnham, Dan Schoening, and Luis Delgado, the Autobots and Decepticons are locked in conflict, their battle exhausting the lifespan and resources of their home planet. While the Autobots leave to find peace among the stars, the Decepticons are distracted from following them by the arrival of Gozer with its faithful Terror Dogs, Vinz Clortho and Zuul. In a Cybertronian form that echoes Gozer's original appearance in 1984's Ghostbusters, the god proves itself formidable against Megatron and his forces. When the Decepticon leader point blank asks what is Gozer's purpose on Cybertron, Gozer states "I have come to your world to end it," and asks them to choose the form of its destruction. Sadly for Cybertron, the result is never in doubt.
The entire scenario is a love letter to the Ghostbusters' original encounter with Gozer and both Erik Burnham and Dan Schoening reimagine it in a way that pays tribute to both franchises coming together for the first time in thirty-five years. Among the Easter Eggs within this new prologue to the famous Autobots vs Decepticons conflict, Starscream is depicted as the Cybertronian Ray Stantz. He foolishly fires upon Gozer despite warnings not to engage and he accidentally chooses Gozer's new form, unintentionally imagining his Megascream form similar to his counterpart from the Transformers: Deviations storyline. While Ray bound Gozer to a form whose primary strength was its size, Megascream's form was upgraded by Unicron to become a combiner powerful enough to kill Optimus Prime.
Gozer being the force who destroyed Cybertron changed everything for the Decepticons. Because of Megatron's stubbornness and refusal to retreat, many of the Cybertronians who fight alongside him against Gozer die, the Decepticon and his few loyal followers narrowly escaping destruction by agreeing to become ghosts themselves. The spiritual Starscream, desperate to redeem himself yet easily persuaded to betray his team, would eventually find the Transformers on Earth, where their worlds would collide with the Ghostbusters. Having considerable experience dealing with Gozer, the Ghostbusters agreed to help the Transformers battle their ethereal opponents, using technology that could have made all the difference on Cybertron thousands of years ago.
