How Godzilla Got His Atomic Breath In The MonsterVerse

Godzilla vs. Kong and the movie’s novelization shed light on the origin of Godzilla’s atomic breath in the MonsterVerse. The fiery blue blast of atomic energy has a reputation as Godzilla’s signature weapon and the most powerful tool in his arsenal. In the MonsterVerse, it played a key role in his battles against the MUTOs, Ghidorah, and Kong.

Dating all the way back to his first appearance, Godzilla’s atomic breath is one of the most recognizable and iconic elements of his character. Originally shown to be a mist-like, colorless attack, atomic breath was used by Godzilla in the 1954 film during his fight with the Japanese military. Since then, it’s gone through a few evolutions and has been depicted through colors like red, purple, and blue, with the latter being the most common throughout most of his movies. As for where it comes from, Toho has been rather consistent in that area. It’s always been understood that since the ability is radioactive in nature that it originated from the nuclear explosion that transformed him into Godzilla in the first place.

The MonsterVerse’s  take on Godzilla doesn’t share the origin of his Toho counterpart, which means there’s a different story behind his atomic breath. Unlike Toho’s version, the Godzilla that exists in Legendary’s universe is an ancient creature that has walked the Earth for thousands of years. His strength and powers can’t be credited to humanity’s nuclear weapons. As made clear by the cave paintings scattered throughout the MonsterVerse movies, Godzilla has had his atomic breath for several millennia. Judging by events that took place in Godzilla vs. Kong, it looks like he and his species acquired it when they lived in the Hollow Earth world.

Godzilla vs. Kong pointed to the Hollow Earth being directly related to his history when it confirmed that Godzilla’s atomic breath and the hidden Hollow Earth energy source are essentially the same thing. Godzilla soaking it up long ago would make sense of this connection. The Godzilla vs. Kong novelization hinted at this because the case as well when it used an Iwi legend to recount the story of Godzilla’s rivalry with Kong. It was stated in the book that Godzilla “ate a star” and began shooting rays out of his mouth. Regardless of what the “star” was, this line strongly suggests that Godzilla’s atomic breath is not an inborn ability.

It’s worth noting that Godzilla is not the only member of his species linked to the atomic breath ability. One example of this is the Godzilla ancestor whose skeleton was found in the Philippines. He used the ability in the MonsterVerse graphic novel, Godzilla: Aftershock. Based on everything that’s known, it’s possible that all members of Godzilla’s species obtained the the blue energy that courses through their bodies by absorbing it from the Hollow Earth core discussed in Godzilla vs. Kong. If so, it’s an origin story that’s completely unique to all past incarnations of the classic kaiju.
