Marvel's Midnight Suns: Supernatural Heroes That Can Join The Roster
Releasing in the second half of 2022, Marvel's Midnight Suns is set to feature one of the most interesting rosters of characters, made up primarily of supernatural heroes, but with a few slots left on the roster that have yet to be revealed, there is room for more supernatural-themed heroes to join the ranks of the Midnight Suns. Based loosely on Marvel Comics' Midnight Sons, the new Marvel's Midnight Suns game follows the story of a new hero, called The Hunter, a customizable character who has to assemble a team to try to stop Hydra, who have awakened their evil mother, Lilith.
In order to succeed in stopping Hydra and Lilith, The Hunter will need to assemble a team of Marvel heroes that includes popular favorites like Captain Marvel and Iron Man, along with some lesser-known heroes, like the Runaways' Nico Minoru. Upon assembling the team, the player will have to pick their squad to bring into missions. The game features turn-based combat, similar to developer Firaxis' previous game, X-COM, but with a new card system unique to Marvel's Midnight Suns.
While the team already features a large group of characters that pulls from every corner of the Marvel Universe, there are still a ton of heroes that would make for interesting additions to the team. Looking at some of Marvel's previous supernatural-themed outings, there are several characters who would fit perfectly in the world of Marvel's Midnight Suns despite their apparent absence. The focus on spells, demons, and a dark world filled with magic could hint at which of these characters might make their way into the roster.
Elsa Bloodstone is a character that was initially introduced into Marvel Comics back in 2001 and has since become a staple character in Marvel's more supernatural outings. While the roster for Marvel's Midnight Suns is already pretty large, Elsa Bloodstone stands out in that her full-time occupation is hunting monsters and demons. Elsa Bloodstone comes from a long line of monster hunters, and her bloodline gives her a regenerative healing factor, superhuman strength, and resistance to supernatural afflictions such as vampire bites. Her expert marksmanship can also provide a unique element to the team, giving her more long-range support with her firearms. Elsa Bloodstone is also a member of the Midnight Sons in Marvel comics, and it would be a missed opportunity not to include her here.
It was revealed in the teaser trailer for Marvel's Midnight Suns that Dr. Strange would be playing a vital role in the story, and it has since been confirmed that he will be joining the team as a playable character. While Dr. Strange is underused in games, another supernatural hero who is frequently an ally of his is even more so. Brother Voodoo is another sorcerer who gained his powers from the Loa, the spiritual gods of voodoo. Brother Voodoo possesses many interesting powers, including control of lower life forms, control over flames and smoke, and the ability to summon the spirit of his brother to inhabit his body and give him extra strength. Brother Voodoo has served as the Sorcerer Supreme in Marvel Comics, and his help could be invaluable to Dr. Strange and the Midnight Suns in Marvel's Midnight Suns.
When Marvel's Midnight Suns releases in 2022, The Hunter will have the unenviable task of having to take down not only Hydra, one of Marvel Comics' most powerful villain groups, but also Lilith, the Mother of all Demons. With a challenge ahead that requires not only a knowledge of the supernatural but a tough, unbreakable fighter, there may be no better choice of an ally to have at The Hunter's side than Moon Knight. Marc Spector is a former Marine and mercenary who is nearly killed while trying to save the daughter of an archeologist. He is brought before a statue of the Egyptian moon god, Khonshu, who heals him and declares him the Moon's Knight, giving him a chance to redeem his life of violence by using his new abilities to help people.
Moon Knight is not only an accomplished fighter and acrobat but also a master combat strategist. This could come into play during Marvel's Midnight Suns' campaign with cards that can buff allies thanks to his strategic influence. Moon Knight has also been killed multiple times, each time being resurrected by Khonshu, which could prove extremely useful in the battle against Lilith. His brain has also been altered by Khonshu, giving him natural resistance to hypnotism and telepathic or psychic attacks.
When it comes to supernatural heroes in Marvel Comics, few are as prolific or powerful as Scarlet Witch. Wanda Maximoff has the ability to tap into chaos magic, giving her powers that range from flight, creating hex bolts to injure her enemies, and even altering reality with certain hexes. Few characters in Marvel Comics possess the range of abilities that she does, making Scarlet Witch perfect for Marvel's Midnight Suns' roster. In addition, Scarlett Witch has also been at the center of many of Marvel Comics' darker, and more devastating storylines. For instance, she had to struggle through her children, Wiccan and Speed, being wiped from existence, and the removal of her husband Vision's emotions, leading to her marriage falling apart. These struggles can help make Scarlet Witch one of the most interesting and well-rounded characters in Marvel's Midnight Suns' roster.
There are plenty more interesting characters that could make their way into Marvel's Midnight Suns' already large roster of interesting, supernatural heroes. While the game already includes some lesser-known heroes, such as the X-Men hero Magik, it would be interesting to see the game's list of playable heroes grow with more supernatural characters that don't typically appear in Marvel media outside the comic books. Marvel's Midnight Suns could be the perfect opportunity to introduce gamers to characters like Brother Voodoo and Elsa Bloodstone, who would no doubt provide unique perspectives and invaluable abilities to the team.
