Spider-Man: No Way Home Is 12% Of 2021's Total US Box Office

As Spider-Man: No Way Home continues its record-breaking run at the box office, it now represents 12% of the $4.45 billion overall domestic total for 2021. The third entry in the MCU Spider-Man trilogy opened on December 17, 2021 to the second biggest box office debut in Hollywood history. It has continued dominating the box office in subsequent weeks, not only domestically, but in many other international markets as well. The film also became the first film during the COVID pandemic era to surpass the $1 billion threshold worldwide.
Spider-Man: No Way Home has been one of the most highly anticipated superhero and Marvel films in recent years. Back in August 2021, the teaser trailer set an all-time record for the most global views in the first 24 hours, with 355.5 million views, and the buzz for the film only increased exponentially from there. Fan anticipation was also bolstered by cast additions from iconic former Spider-Man franchise characters such as Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin, Alfred Molina's Doc Ock, and others. Joined by current MCU Spider-Man stars Tom Holland and Zendaya, the film had also caused many online movie ticketing services to crash when tickets originally went on sale November 29. It has easily become the highest-grossing Spider-Man and Sony film ever made.
Domestically, the film has now earned $611 million so far after being in theaters less than three weeks. According to The Wrap, this total accounts for 12% of the US 2021 box office. It currently claims the 10th spot on the all-time domestic chart after surpassing Incredibles 2. Spidey will continue to climb the chart in the coming days as the film is primed to claim the eighth spot, above The Avengers and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Within a similar timeframe, the MCU hit also has its target set on the 10th spot worldwide, as it will soon surpass Frozen 2's $1.45 billion gross worldwide. The latest Spider-Man film has also helped the domestic box office rise +100% above last year’s $2.28 billion. It faces very little if any competition during the ensuing weeks until the release of Paramount’s horror franchise latest sequel to Scream hits theaters on Jan. 14th.

The domestic and worldwide box office has not experienced a hit of this magnitude or anything near it, since the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker back in 2019. That film was one of the last pre-pandemic tentpoles titles to garner blockbuster success, and Spider-Man: No Way Home has already exceeded both the domestic and worldwide totals of that film. The significance of any film reaching such heights in any era, especially in the COVID era, cannot be overstated.
For many, the record-breaking success of Spider-Man: No Way Home is also a reminder of the box office legacy of the original Spider-Man film franchise of the early 2000s. Spider-Man, starring Tobey Maguire, which opened on May 3, 2002, became the fastest film to earn more than $100 million at the weekend box office, amassing a remarkable $114.8 million at the time. The two subsequent film sequels went on to break further records as well during their theatrical releases. It seems fitting then, that several of the stars from those films returned to the current MCU franchise, once again helping break box office records. This seems to represent the undeniable box office power of the Spider-Man character within the cinematic medium, during any generation or era.
