Jurassic World Dominion Timeline: How Long After Fallen Kingdom It's Set

The events of Jurassic World: Dominion take place years after the last film, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and decades after Jurassic Park. Director Colin Trevorrow is concluding not just the Jurassic World trilogy he began in 2015 but Dominion is also the grand finale of the six-film Jurassic Park saga began by Steven Spielberg. Jurassic World: Dominion also unites two generations of characters as Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldbloom reprise their Jurassic Park icons, Dr. Alan Grant, Dr. Ellie Sattler, and Dr. Ian Malcolm, respectively. The original trio joins Chris Pratt as Owen Grady and Bryce Dallas Howard as Claire Dearing from the Jurassic World films.

The premise of Jurassic World: Dominion involves the world coping with dinosaurs now living in the wild, with no human city or settlement safe from the intrusion of prehistoric beasts. In Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the dinosaurs were rescued from Isla Nublar, which was destroyed by a volcanic eruption. The dinos were brought to Lockwood Manor in Northern California where many of the prehistoric beasts were sold at auction. Ultimately, young Maisie Lockwood (Isabella Sermon) let the imprisoned dinosaur clones loose on the world. Combined with Jurassic World's proprietary dinosaur cloning technology also being duplicated by other genetics companies, the formerly extinct animals are now proliferating all over the planet.

Jurassic Park's legacy characters have appeared in the later sequels. Ian Malcolm was the lead in The Lost World: Jurassic Park and he also cameoed in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Alan Grant headlined Jurassic Park III, which also had a brief appearance by Ellie Sattler. But Jurassic World: Dominion is the first time since the original film all three are back together, and they may also be joined by the now-adult Lex (Ariana Richards) and Tim Murphy (Joseph Mazzell0), who were just kids in Jurassic Park and were last seen in The Lost World.

Jurassic World: Dominion is set in 2022, with the sequel helping kick off summer movie season with its June 10th release date. Conveniently, the Jurassic Park/World movies are set in the same years the films are theatrically released in real life. Therefore, the events of Jurassic Park happened in 1993, with The Lost World taking place in 1997, and Jurassic Park III set in 2001. This also means Jurassic World: Dominion happens 29 years after the original Jurassic Park.

Interestingly, the Jurassic Park theme park never actually opened as planned in the 1990s. It wasn't until Masrani Global Corporation bought InGen that the park opened, rebranded as Jurassic World, in 2005. Jurassic World operated for 10 years as a successful tourist destination until the Indominus Rex incident forced the park to permanently close in 2015.

Jurassic World: Dominion is set 4 years after the events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which took place three years after Jurassic World. After the Jurassic World theme park shut down in 2015, a group of mercenaries arrived at Isla Nublar 6 months later to retrieve the DNA of the Indominus Rex, and they inadvertently let the Mosasaurus loose in the ocean. Then, in 2018, Mt. Sibo erupted, which destroyed Isla Nublar and prompted an evacuation of most of the dinosaurs. The events of Netflix's canonical animated series, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, begin during Jurassic World and continue in the years leading up to Fallen Kingdom.

Jurassic World: Dominion picks up the movies' story in 2022, 4 years after Maisie Lockwood set the dinosaurs loose from Lockwood Manor. In that time, the dinosaurs have spread all over the planet and throughout every climate. Maisie herself is a telltale sign of when Dominion takes place: In Fallen Kingdom, Maisie Lockwood (who is a perfect human clone) was 9 years old but in Jurassic World: Dominion, Maisie is now 13 years old.
