Sifu: How to Beat Sean Boss Guide (Tips, Tricks & Strategies)

Sean is the boss of the second level in Sifu. After making their way through the Club, the player will encounter Sean and another individual in the middle of a mysterious ritual known as 'The Burning.' Afterwards, the player and Sean face off in a one-on-one.

Sifu is styled after films like Old Boy or Dragons Forever. The player plays as the child of a sifu (or martial arts teacher) who was murdered by a former student. With the former student were four other accomplices, one of which was Sean. After eight years of training, the player character is now on the hunt to take down the five responsible for the murder.

Sean wields a staff, making him dangerous from longer ranges. Sean will try to swipe at the player's head or feet, and occasionally jab or shoulder check them, causing the player to stumble. For Sifu beginners, Sean can seem intimidating and impenetrable. However, learning Sean's attack patterns and how to properly dodge them will make the fight go by quickly.

During the first phase of the fight, Sean will have two general attacks patterns. In one, Sean will swing his staff (usually) three times, trying to combo the player. In the other phase, Sean will try to knock the player back, either with a shoulder check or by thrusting the staff forward. In phase one, all of Sean's attacks can be dodged by holding down L1 and pushing the left stick down. This, along with moving the left stick upwards, will be the player's key to martial arts mastery in Sifu. Knowing the visual cues for the different attacks and dodging will allow the player to catch Sean when he's vulnerable.

The attack players want to look out the most for is when Sean swings his staff two times and then spins around on the third swing. After dodging this last swing, Sean is left wide open. The most effective combo to use here is the Spin Hook Kick, which can be unlocked through the skill tree. This move is highly effective against Sean as it will always knock him down. Once he's on the ground, the player can pummel him. While it's not as flashy as the fights in Sifu's live-action adaptation, repeating this dodge pattern, Spin Hook Kick, and pummel will gradually build up Sean's structure gauge. Once the indicator is broken, the player can perform a takedown and bring the fight into phase two.

In phase two, Sean will now use a sweep attack to knock the player on the floor. To dodge Sean's sweep, the player must hold L1 and push the left stick up. The difficulty of phase two is reacting to if Sean will shoulder check or if he will sweep. If the player does the wrong dodge, they will get hit by his attack. Sean will do his mixup of sweep or shoulder check if he is far from the player. The player can use this to their advantage, mentally preparing to react one way or another. Noticing the initial animation is key to responding appropriately. Once the player can react consistently, the fight can continue as it did in phase one, slowly chipping away at Sean's health and structure. With enough time, Sean's health or structure will be depleted, and while a final cutscene of martial arts choreography, the player will have beaten the second boss of Sifu.
