Marvel Proves Black Panther Has Never Given Storm Enough Credit

Warning! Contains a preview for Black Panther #4

A new preview from Marvel Comics proves that Black Panther doesn't give Storm nearly enough credit as she deserves. While King T'Challa may be hiding some major secrets from his own country and allies, he should know better than to think he could hide anything from Storm. Being a cunning and capable ruler herself on the planet Mars, Storm has always been able to see T'Challa quite clearly, and this is proven in this new preview for Marvel's upcoming issue of Black Panther.

In previous issues of Marvel's new Black Panther series, T'Challa's role as a king is much different than it once was. The change to a parliamentary government has brought on conflicting emotions within the Black Panther. While it's good that the voices of his people will be heard, he's no longer able to protect them with the unilateral authority he's used to. It also means that he's now far more accountable to his nation when/if his darkest secrets are exposed. This is why T'Challa has dropped everything to save the various Wakandan sleeper assassins he's had deployed all over the world in secret who've been compromised and marked for death. While it was a decision he made when he was Wakanda's sole authority, the ramifications of his actions being exposed now would have disastrous results on a multitude of levels.

Although the previous Black Panther #3 saw T'Challa coming to the mutant planet of Arakko (formerly Mars) under the pretense of lying low after saving one of his sleeper agents, he was actually there for another reason. Although he and the Wakandan mutant Gentle put on a show of hostility to make it seem like Gentle hated T'Challa, it was later revealed that Gentle is one of the Black Panther's sleepers. Despite Arakko being a fairly new creation made by mutants with Storm as its regent, Black Panther still placed a sleeper assassin on Mars just in case it ever becomes a threat to Wakanda (all while he and Storm have recently resumed their romance). Now, the preview for Black Panther #4 from John Ridley, Juann Cabal, and Ibrahim Moustafa reveals that Storm knows much more than Black Panther presumes. Here are the preview pages and synopsis for the upcoming issue:

THE LONG SHADOW, PART FOURShuri's life hangs in the balance, and with T'Challa off-planet, things are not looking good! But before T'Challa can help his sister…the truth will finally come out. Has the assassin's ringleader finally been caught?!

The fact that Storm knows T'Challa is keeping secrets and has been lying to her is brutal, especially because they had both agreed that they wouldn't keep secrets if they got back together. Black Panther's personal life aside, how will Storm react as Arakko's regent? Will she make any political moves denouncing Wakanda? The synopsis does tease that the truth will finally come out (it's only a matter of how public it will be). Due to Black Panther's extremely unethical decision to have assassins on standby all over the globe, Wakanda may fall into some deep political trouble. Furthermore, it wouldn't be surprising if the Black Panther's crown is in jeopardy as a result.

Regardless, it looks as though the bulk of the issue will see Black Panther protecting his sister Shuri who knows T'Challa's secrets and is next on the kill list. However, it wouldn't be surprising to see Black Panther facing a reckoning from his ex-wife who he should have been far more honest with. Not only has Black Panther jeopardized his renewed relationship with Storm, but he's also risked the safety of his entire nation. Fans will learn more soon enough when the full Black Panther #4 releases on March 2nd.
