The Batman's Catwoman Backstory Hints At Her Perfect DC Future

Warning! Contains spoilers for The Batman
Catwoman’s backstory in The Batman gives a perfect idea of the character’s future. The Batman takes inspiration from a wide selection of comics, with some being more recent than others. Selina Kyle’s story in The Batman echoes a more recent story of hers from the DC Universe, and it could be an indication of the direction in which The Batman sequels will take her character.
In the continuity of The New 52, Selina was the daughter of Rex Calabrese, an infamous crime lord better known as the “Lion” who ran Gotham’s criminal underworld before Carmine Falcone took over and Batman made his debut. The two reunite in Batman Eternal, and after his death, Selina decides to follow in his footsteps and become Gotham's newest crime lord. Selina’s original status quo as a cat burglar was restored by the time DC Rebirth began. However, the storyline hasn’t been brought up in recent years.
Selina’s origins in The Batman makes it possible that a similar story could happen in a future installment. One of the film's major twists was the reveal that Zoë Kravitz's Catwoman is the daughter of Carmine Falcone. Although it’s not the same character, Selina is still depicted as the child of an infamous crime boss. Falcone is killed by the Riddler near the end of the film, so that means that Selina could possibly inherit his operation. In the process, Selina could become a crime boss in his absence, just like she did with her father in The New 52.

However, the graphic novel The Long Halloween which The Batman explicitly takes inspiration from had previously hinted at Selina's familial backstory and did not move the character into that position. Since Matt Reeves' The Batman combines elements of various Batman stories both old and new, there's still a chance that The New 52's destiny for Selina could be implemented in a sequel. Additionally, Selina bonded with Rex over the course of Batman Eternal, which contrasts her hatred depicted for Falcone throughout The Batman. This dynamic makes it appear that she might not have any interest in taking over his line of work.
Selina’s character arc in Matt Reeves' The Batman gives a good idea for how her story could progress. Despite some major differences in past comics, none of them are so big that they would make it impossible for a similar story to inspire a sequel. It’s currently unclear how her character will play out in future films, but there’s at least one possibility that’s been hinted.
