The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: 8 Unpopular Opinions (According To Reddit)

Amy Sherman-Palladino's period piece, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has received near-universal praise. It's rightfully acclaimed for its zany characters, beautiful cinematography, and brilliant comedy.

Almost everyone loves the trailblazing lead, Mrs. Maisel, her fast-paced dialogues, and the fact that she strives to break the glass ceiling. However, the internet is also a vast expanse of non-fans who aren't enthusiastic about her, at all. In fact, some of them do not see eye to eye with the majority on her privilege, or the type of comedy that is used on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's. They take to Reddit to express their controversial and unpopular opinions about the show.

Midge's privileged lifestyle and luxuries ended with her marriage. She moved back in with her parents and began working as a make-up counter girl at B. Altman. Though she regularly goes through trials and tribulations, unfortunately, not all Reddit users agree, and here4dchai says, "I understand a character to be flawed but everything just works out for our leading lady and she gets away with everything..."

Truth is, Midge's failures are plenty but she has become good at handling them. She was off to a rocky start in season 4, in that, she'd lost her Shy Baldwin gig, made Jackie Kennedy cry and the Daily News reporter, L. Roy Dunham, gave her constant grief. Midge just knows how to manage stress with her fast-talk, sarcasm and some viewers mistake that for her being able to escape repercussions.

A little-known fact about Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Paladino is that her shows are inspired by Borscht Belt-style comedy. Both Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel are famous for characters blessed with quick-witted repartee.

Reddit user badmspguy has the unpopular opinion that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel characters talk "too much and too fast." Whilst they are entitled to their opinion, it has to be remembered that all comics, Midge included, have to be quick on their feet. It's part of their job and their identity. Most fans agree that the show's dialogues are well-paced and easily comprehensible.

Midge is the source of some of the funniest The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel quotes and draws big laughs from her body language. User Torimisspelling1, however, thinks her comedy is "cheap." They write, "90% of the time her talent exudes but when she resorts to attacking those closest to her, it feels lazy..."

Midge talks about her personal life, her family, and her ex-husband on stage because that is the essence of her brand of observational comedy. Moreover, Midge's best stand-ups on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel include varied sets that have nothing whatsoever to do with her family or friends. The third annual "Stop Arthritis and Rheumatism Telethon," and USO (United Service Organizations) Christmas show are a few examples in that direction. Midge didn't plan the life of a comic, rather, she (and Suzy) miraculously discovered her talent. If that isn't comedic brilliance, what is?

Another unpopular opinion comes from Redditor GladPen who writes, "The final nail in the coffin was having her [Midge] go on tour, leave her family and fiancé behind, without showing any negative reaction," adding that the eponymous protagonist is "...selfish and self-centered..."

Midge's career choices do not make her self-centered but an empowered, single mother who is in charge of her destiny. Whilst Rose may not agree with Midge's choice of career, she understands a woman's life is precarious when it's dependent on the whims of a man. It's primarily the reason she watches Esther and Ethan when Midge is out and about. Before leaving on tour with Shy, Midge left her children in responsible hands and her then-fiancé, Benjamin, was the most accommodating person on the show.

Fans found it totally unrealistic that Midge turned down money from Shy's people when she was up to her ears in debt. She was living a lifestyle she absolutely couldn't afford, and yet, she went ahead and flat out refused a whopping $12,000.

Redditor Cucumberappleblizz, however, is glad that Midge turned down hush money, writing, "It seems like a lot of people believe she is being prideful, but I think her act was moral and that taking that money would be disgusting." Though fans are all for sticking to principles, they find it odd that the same Midge who messed with the waiters, ordered the most expensive cocktail, and asked Susie to pick a few extra bags of Chanel No. 5 refused money that would have kept her financially afloat. Her moral stand falls flat on viewers, and they'd much rather see her in control of things once.

Midge and Benjamin had chemistry, but they, unfortunately, could never really get the timing right. They were perfect for each other, in every sense of the word. However, although fans believe that she belonged with him, Redditor BogusBuffalo says "Benjamin was too good for her."

To counter this, fans point out that Midge was exactly the right person Benjamin was looking for. He loved her despite her faults, and so did she. The relationship came crashing down because Midge secured a spot on tour with Shy Baldwin and got cold feet about Benjamin. Fans do hold Midge's cowardice against her but they also understand she entered that relationship with her own kind of baggage. Joel wasn't comfortable with her comedy career, and she was wrong to assume the same about Benjamin. Their conflict escalated due to their lack of communication and nothing else.

User missanphan98 thinks Midge become unlikable in season 4, adding that they hoped her "crash and fall at the end of season 3 might have humbled her but it didn’t."

Whether a viewer likes it or not, it must be remembered that Midge is a well-rounded person with flaws, weaknesses, strengths, and dreams. She is well characterized because the writers want her to seem real. Does she make mistakes? Absolutely she does, but at the same time, she isn't afraid to apologize or own up. Frankly, Midge has far too many redeeming qualities which make her one of the most likable main characters on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Although Midge's Paris set from season 2's "Simone" is ranked among the show's very best, Redditor TightsArentPants feels differently about it. They write, "I’m so so sorry if it’s a favorite scene by [sic] some... There’s too much going on for me."

It must be remembered that Midge's Paris performance was more than just a set. She was in a different country, her material was impromptu, and yet, she absolutely stole the show. The audiences' response gave her a renewed sense of confidence, optimism and she knew if she could perform that well across the sea then she was going to be a star back home.
