GvK's Ending Proves It's Too Soon For Son Of Kong | Screen Rant

What happened in Godzilla vs. Kong’s ending proves that it’s too soon for a Son of Kong movie. Reportedly, Son of Kong is the title of the mystery Godzilla vs. Kong sequel expected to film in Australia. Legendary has yet to confirm these plans, but the rumors line up with a previous report about Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard being in early talks to direct a Son of Kong adaptation.

If it’s true that Legendary is working on a Son of Kong movie for the MonsterVerse, the film would share its title with the sequel to the 1933 King Kong classic. Released in the same year as its predecessor, the movie took the story back to Skull Island and followed a group of humans who crossed paths with the 12-foot-tall, albino offspring of King Kong. It’s likely that if the MonsterVerse tells its own version of the story, it’ll tie directly to Godzilla vs. Kong’s ending by revealing that Kong started a family of his own after the Hollow Earth move.

Kong relocating to the Hollow Earth was an important step toward a potential Son of Kong project, but it didn’t provide all of the necessary setup. For Son of Kong to work, the MonsterVerse will have to either rush through Kong’s story or skip over some important life moments in his journey, which is why it would be better if his next movie was Kong 2. Godzilla vs. Kong didn’t give Kong a new family, nor did it make him the true alpha of the Hollow Earth. These are storylines that the ending set up to be explored in a future movie, not glossed over in the beginning of a spinoff.

The movie ended with the implication that Kong had completed his transformation into the MonsterVerse’s King Kong by becoming the alpha of the Hollow Earth. The problem, though, is that Kong did nothing in the movie to earn the title. Kong sitting on his ancestors’ throne obviously wouldn't mean anything to the other Titans. Godzilla, on the other hand, gained dominion over the MonsterVerse Titans by beating Ghidorah, who had emerged as a “false king”. To get the same level of respect in the Hollow Earth, it makes sense that Kong should have to dethrone the Hollow Earth’s current alpha (whoever that may be). Only then would he truly be King Kong.

All things considered, a MonsterVerse version of Son of Kong does hold a great deal of promise, as there is plenty that the movie can do with Kong’s son in the Hollow Earth, especially since so much of this place is still unchartered territory. That being said, it would be a major disappointment if Son of Kong preceded Kong 2 or worse, took it off the table altogether. Kong finding a family after Godzilla vs. Kong and earning his position as the Hollow Earth alpha are stories that deserve to be told on the big screen.
