2018's A Simple Favor impressed both critics and audiences with its fusion of crime thriller and black comedy, and now A Simple Favor 2 is on the way. Directed by Paul Feig, A Simple Favor represented a departure of sorts from Feig's usual efforts, which had mostly been wacky comedies starring Melissa McCarthy. While A Simple Favor is certainly funny, its sense of humor is far more wry and subtle than most of the jokes found in films like Bridesmaids and Ghostbusters 2016.
Based on a 2017 novel of the same name by author Darcey Bell, A Simple Favor stars Anna Kendrick as the aptly named Stephanie Smothers, a widowed mommy vlogger and kind of a socially awkward dork. Her life changes after meeting high-class professional woman Emily Nelson (Blake Lively), due to their kids both attending the same class. The two become quite close, but after Emily goes missing, Stephanie takes it upon herself to get to the bottom of what's going on.
A Simple Favor itself seems like a simple enough movie at first, but as the story goes on, twists and turns begin to fly at a pace it can be hard to keep up with sometimes. Not that trying to do so isn't fun, as audiences were left stunned and intrigued by each new surprising development, as were critics. Earning nearly $100 million on a budget of only $20 million, it's no surprise that Lionsgate wants to make A Simple Favor 2, and here's everything known about the sequel so far.
The first question anyone who enjoyed A Simple Favor is likely to have about a sequel is whether or not stars Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively are returning. Thankfully, they're both coming back, as their chemistry together and combined star power was a big factor in A Simple Favor's critical and commercial success. No other casting is confirmed yet, but with both stars signed on, it's likely other big names from the first movie will eventually agree to return too, such as Henry Golding as Emily's ex-husband Sean.
Nothing has been officially confirmed about A Simple Favor 2's story yet, which makes sense, since it will likely be another tale full of surprise twists. The first movie definitely left the door open for a sequel, with Stephanie's parenting turned mystery-solving blog now a massive hit, and her beginning a career as a part-time private eye. Never one to be counted out, A Simple Favor's ending saw Emily seeming to turn into an alpha of her prison, and while she was sentenced to 20 years, it wouldn't be surprising to see her let out for good behavior in time for A Simple Favor 2. She may even try to rekindle things with Sean, who's finally achieving the professional success she always wanted him to. That may seem unlikely, but Emily's an expert in seduction.
Since A Simple Favor 2 was just announced, and filming has yet to begin, a release in 2022 seems highly unlikely. However, with Paul Feig back as director, writer Jessica Sharzer returning to pen the script, and Kendrick and Lively ready to go, it's likely A Simple Favor 2 will begin production before the end of this year. The first A Simple Favor released to theaters about a year after production began, so a likely safe bet for A Simple Favor 2's release is fall 2023.
