Stranger Things' Eddie Munson Actor Recalls His Unusual Casting Process

Stranger Things season 4 newcomer Joseph Quinn recalls the strange audition process he took part in when he was cast as Eddie Munson. Quinn joined the series in the first volume of its fourth season, debuting in the season premiere, "The Hellfire Club." The star will return in season four, volume two, which will release on July 1st, 2022.
A newcomer to Netflix's hit sci-fi series, Quinn plays Eddie Munson, a student at Hawkins High School who is the guitarist for the band Corroded Coffin, as well as the head of the school's D&D club, the Hellfire Club. Befriending Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard) and Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo) through the club, Eddie is soon dragged into the mysteries of the Upside Down when he is suspected to be behind a number of gruesome deaths by the town, leading to Dustin and his friends attempting to clear his name. With Eddie set to have a key memorable moment in the season's upcoming two-part finale, Quinn has reflected on his journey of joining the show, including his unusual casting process.
In an interview with The Guardian, Quinn reflected on how he was cast as Eddie Munson, revealing that he felt the process stood apart from what he had been used to. When asked about how he was cast following his submission of two audition tapes, the actor elaborated by saying that he didn't take part in any meetings or chemistry readings, with the process being shorter than he thought it would be. Quinn admitted that this left him feeling unnerved, with him afterward wondering if showrunners the Duffer Brothers would feel like they'd miscast him later on. Read Quinn's full response below.
"No meetings, no chemistry reads, no protracted process. It was pretty unusual and very disarming. It meant I was waiting for [creators] the Duffer brothers to realize they’d made a mistake."

While the showrunners have praised Quinn, the Duffer Brothers did admit they had one regret related to his character. The Duffer Brothers revealed they regretted killing Chrissy Cunningham (Grace Van Dien), the popular head cheerleader of Hawkins High School, following the filming of her interactions with Eddie during an interview in early June. The showrunner's revealed that Chrissy's death was filmed ahead of when they shot her meeting with Eddie in the woods, meaning that her fate had already been sealed before Quinn and Dien had the opportunity to act alongside one another and display their chemistry. Despite the regret, the Duffer Brothers praised both Quinn and Dien for their performances, highlighting Quinn's spontaneity and Dien's reactions to him, stating that it seemingly helped endear both characters to audiences.
Following a prolonged wait between the third and fourth season, Stranger Things' return has been warmly received by fans, becoming Netflix's most-watched English series to date. Alongside the latest season's success, Eddie has quickly become a fan-favorite character, with Quinn recently teasing what his future may hold beyond the penultimate season. With such a positive reaction, it may surprise some fans to learn how quickly Eddie was cast, but while Quinn may have had his own doubts due to the unusual casting process, the character's warm reception has solidified him as a favorite among the show's cast and proved that the Duffer Brothers had made the right decision by casting the actor.
