Did Stranger Things Season 4 Hide A Pretty Important Character Death?
Warning: this article contains spoilers for Stranger Things season 4.
Stranger Things season 4 volume 2 ends with some poignant losses, but there's one character death that the show may have hidden. The ending of Stranger Things season 4 seems the most monumental finale in the show to date. The most crushing loss in Stranger Things' season 4 finale is Max - and although Eleven managed to save her life, it appears Max won't be the same again as Vecna took her sight, broke her limbs, and put her in a coma. Yet among this emotional barrage of death and tragedy, it was pretty easy to miss and forget that Stranger Things season 4 may have also killed off another pretty important character, although their demise isn't seen on screen.
Stranger Things certainly isn't afraid of a fake-out death. Dr. Brenner seemed to bite the dust in Stranger Things season 1 but returned to mentor Eleven in season 4, and Jim Hopper is living proof that even if characters get a funeral and a big send-off, that doesn't necessarily mean they're dead.
During the military attack on the underground desert base, Dr. Sam Owens is handcuffed after his argument with Dr. Brenner. Owens tries to plead with Lt. Colonel Jack Sullivan to spare Eleven's life, but his pleas aren't necessary since Eleven takes down the military helicopter with her telekinetic powers. While Eleven undoubtedly kills the soldiers in the helicopter and destroys all the military vehicles in the process, it seems like Owens and Sullivan survive the explosion since they were underground at the time. Even so, they're not seen again for the rest of Stranger Things season 4, which led many viewers to assume they died. While Owens may not have died in the explosion, he would still be stranded in the desert with no vehicles to escape in, so getting out may be easier said than done. If Dr. Owens did actually die in Stranger Things, it might have just been an editorial choice to exclude the moment and leave it up to the viewer's imagination, but that seems like a bit of a stretch.
Since Stranger Things does not show Dr. Owens' dead body, it's reasonable to presume that he'll return in Stranger Things season 5. He's last seen in handcuffs with Jack Sullivan and the surviving military personnel, meaning that if Owens is going to escape the desert, it's going to be with Jack Sullivan. Sullivan is seemingly still devoted to taking down Eleven, believing that she's responsible for the deaths in Hawkins. Of course, Owens knows more about Eleven than most, especially after the death of Dr. Brenner. It, therefore, seems likely that Sullivan will view Owens as the key to finding Eleven and eventually killing her.
Sullivan might have difficulty extracting such information as Owens has displayed a strong moral compass, such as when he defied Dr. Brenner and insisted on giving Eleven the ability to choose whether she helped her friends or not. As such, even if Owens is alive, he probably won't have the best of times during Stranger Things season 5, and the military might deploy some cruel tactics to try and get Owens to talk. It's unlikely that Owens will just be subjected to torture throughout all of Stranger Things season 5, however, and it seems likely that he'll be brought back into the main fold. Whether that is through an elaborate escape plan or Owens finally crumbling and revealing information about Eleven remains to be seen. Either way, Owens could still play a pivotal role, as he now understands Eleven's powers better than anyone, and he could be key to unlocking her final potential en route to defeating Vecna once and for all.
