Mass Effect & Dragon Age DLC Is Now Free As BioWare Shuts Down Points
Most pieces of Mass Effect and Dragon Age DLC are now completely free thanks to publisher Electronic Arts discontinuing the BioWare Points currency system. BioWare's twin RPG series take players across the Milky Way galaxy and into the fantasy world of Thedas, with both franchises running parallel since 2007. Recent updates on Mass Effect 4 and Dragon Age 4 suggest that development on both titles is progressing smoothly, and now fans can get free DLC for older entries in both series.
BioWare's Mass Effect trilogy brought players on an epic quest across the stars to stop the mysterious Reapers from destroying all life in the Milky Way. The three games bring protagonist Commander Shepard on a truly personal adventure, with saved game imports granting weight to each player's choices, and various pieces of DLC expanded the story even further. Some of this post-launch content, like Mass Effect 2's Lair of the Shadow Broker expansion and Mass Effect 3's Citadel DLC, are widely considered to be some of the trilogy's greatest moments. The recently-released Mass Effect Legendary Edition remaster included DLC from throughout the trilogy, but now those playing the original games can acquire those same expansions for free.
Reddit user AircraftSam89 recently posted an email from Electronic Arts explaining that nearly all Mass Effect and Dragon Age DLC has been made available for free. The publisher will stop supporting BioWare Points on October 11, so most downloadable content previously purchased using the digital currency will now be free. This includes single-player DLC for Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, even big expansions like Lair of the Shadow Broker and Citadel. BioWare Points will still be usable for the next 90 days, though they can only be used to purchase Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Packs.
Using this free Dragon Age DLC, fans and newcomers alike can easily prepare for the series new game Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. The fourth entry in the fantasy RPG saga will pick up where 2014's Dragon Age: Inquisition left off, with players facing off against the deity known as the Dread Wolf Fen'Harel. The powerful god of tricks and betrayal appeared in Inquisition under the guise of a companion named Solas, but Dreadwolf will apparently see him act as a more antagonistic figure. While Inquisition received a number of single-player story expansions, this content was not available through BioWare Points and therefore has not been made free.
Electronic Arts discontinuing the use of BioWare Points could have made it impossible for players to acquire old Mass Effect and Dragon Age DLC, but instead the publisher has given gamers free access to this content. The decision stands in stark contrast to Ubisoft decommissioning Assassin's Creed: Liberation on PC, which recently barred fans from accessing the spin-off adventure. By making this DLC free, BioWare is also helping new Mass Effect and Dragon Age fans catch up on the series before their next installments arrive.
