Boba Fett's Trailer Avoids All The Worst Disney+ TV Show Expectations
It's clear from the Book of Boba Fett trailer that the new show will attempt to avoid many of the worst tendencies of Disney+'s ongoing expanded Star Wars universe. Unlike hit series such as The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett resists tempting viewers with the promise of exciting cameos and returning characters. Instead – apart from the titular bounty hunter-turned ruler – it seems that the show will attempt to explore new stories and characters, setting it apart from much of the Disney Star Wars era.
The first trailer for the Book of Boba Fett indicates that the show will revolve around the power vacuum left in the absence of gangster Jabba the Hutt. Featuring glimpses of Jabba's notorious palace on Tatooine, the show places Boba Fett front and center after his triumphant return to the franchise during The Mandalorian season 2. The trailer features Fett and his associate Fennec Shand (played by Ming-Na Wen) negotiating with underworld figures over who will exert control over Jabba's criminal empire. Although flashes of familiar alien species are on display, the Book of Boba Fett trailer is notable for showcasing a new cast of Star Wars characters.
The range of unfamiliar faces showcased in the Book of Boba Fett trailer suggests that the show will avoid some of the major problems that have dogged Disney+'s Star Wars TV shows to date. Specifically, by not trying to lure viewers in with the prospect of high-profile cameos and legacy characters (with the notable exception of the main protagonist), the show can take the Star Wars cinematic universe in an interesting new direction, without the risk of it becoming stale or recycling old narrative devices. Ultimately, this approach could not only benefit The Book of Boba Fett, but other upcoming Star Wars series, providing the approach proves successful.
The over-reliance on returning characters rather than injecting new blood into the Star Wars story has dogged the Disney era from the outset. Beyond successful shows like The Mandalorian relying on cameos as a hook (such as Luke Skywalker's much-publicized appearance in season 2), tentpole releases including the sequel trilogy were often criticized for featuring poorly drawn original characters at the expense of shoehorning in established figures. The lack of character development for figures like Poe Dameron and Finn was a major problem throughout the updated series and typified Star Wars' simultaneous desire to move forwards whilst still clinging to the past. By focusing on a beloved legacy character in a new setting, The Book of Boba Fett may finally be able to move past this issue.
This is not to say that The Book of Boba Fett is completely free from familiar faces to the Star Wars audience. The trailer features several recurring characters from earlier Star Wars entries, such as the Ithorian Momaw Nadon – also known as Hammerhead – whose most prominent previous appearance was in Episode IV: A New Hope. Similarly, Boba Fett appears to spend a portion of the trailer arguing with fellow bounty hunter Bossk – best-known for his role in The Empire Strikes Back. However, neither of these characters are prominent enough to distract from the wider Book of Boba Fett story, indicating that the series is determined to move in an original direction. While it doesn't introduce a completely new cast, The Book of Boba Fett trailer suggests that Disney is learning from previous Star Wars mistakes.
