Resident Evil 2 Mod Adds Hauntingly Happy Pikachu To Creepy Hallways

The recent Resident Evil 2 remake is filled with plenty of chilling sights, but one mod adds the unexpected threat of a disturbingly cheerful version of Pokémon’s adorable mascot Pikachu. Released back in 2019, Resident Evil 2 retold the story of the 1998 original with improved graphics and a control scheme more in line with modern Resident Evil games. Fans and critics hailed this new version of Resident Evil 2 as a solid reimagining of the original PlayStation-era classic, with the Resident Evil 2 remake outselling its predecessor and paving the way for further remakes of Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4.
As was the case with 2020’s Resident Evil 3 remake, Resident Evil 2 has seen its fair share of mods from fans. This includes looking for opportunities to enhance the terror of the base game or add some humor to the grim proceedings. Some of these RE 2 mods add VR support and a chilling first-person perspective or instead restore the fixed-camera view from the original game. Others are simple reskins that replace Resident Evil 2’s main protagonists with Dead Space 2’s Isaac Clarke or Dino Crisis’s Regina, as well as swapping out the terrifying Mr. X with the equally deadly Nemesis from Resident Evil 3. Even more playful Resident Evil 2 mods have heralded Mr. X’s regular attacks with DMX’s “X Gon' Give It To Ya” in reference to a popular internet meme.
Now Resident Evil 2 players can find themselves hunted not by a seven-foot-tall undead monster, but by the ever-adorable Pikachu of the Pokémon franchise. Twitter user and 3D artist Marcos RC recently shared a brief gameplay clip of a Resident Evil 2 mod that is available on their Patreon. It inserts the cute, electric-powered rodent into the darkened streets of Raccoon City, as shown when Leon encounters a wild Pikachu in a ruined house. The Electric-type mouse mascot of the Pokémon franchise slowly advances upon the unlucky cop with an ironic smile on its face before attacking Leon with surprisingly slow strikes. All the while, Pikachu punctuates each attack with a cute little cry of “Pika! Pika!” that serves little comfort for Leon as he slowly tries to escape the cuddly onslaught.
There will be plenty more Resident Evil action to come in the next few years, as Capcom recently announced its series of RE remakes will continue with the fan-favorite Resident Evil 4 - which was announced during this month’s PlayStation State Of Play showcase and shown off in further detail in last week’s Capcom Showcase livestream. Leon S. Kennedy will return with a much darker personality in Resident Evil 4 Remake as he attempts to rescue the president’s daughter Ashley Graham from a sinister cult in rural Spain. The recent gameplay footage has hinted popular characters like Ada Wong could make an appearance as well.
Pokémon’s Pikachu is one of the last characters that players would expect to pop up in a Resident Evil game, and the endearing little lighting mouse isn’t usually scary. However, seeing the fan-favorite Nintendo mascot emerge from the shadowy ruins of Raccoon City to terrorize Leon in Resident Evil 2 is both a surreal and humorous experience for fans of either series.
